Dear
My name is Sophie; I am a year 7. Today I want to tell you about Maui’s Dolphin’s because I want to help protect them.
Maui’s Dolphin only live in New Zealand which is why we should protect them. There are only about 111 Maui’s left. Approxamitly 250 of all types of dolphins die a year. The reasons they die are, from people littering their waters with plastic bags, which some Maui’s think is food. Nets are a hassle, if they swim into it they cant swim out because dolphins cant swim backwards also boats that are driving too fast hit Maui’s Dolphins. People that go fishing can get their fishing lines caught on the Dolphins. They are dying from all of these things.
I think that as a country New Zealand should BAND PLASTIC BAGS they hurt many different animals not just Maui’s.
I would like for signs to go up in the water to show where the Maui’s live and say “There is no fishing here”. There are less Maui’s Dolphins there Kiwis in New Zealand. WWF are also been trying to protect the dolphin as well. A lady from WWF came to talk to our class about the Maui’s. She really inspired me.
I really care about saving them as I am going to adopt one.
I would love if you could help as well.
Sophie
