Matariki Report

Introduction
Matariki is a celebration of the Maori New Year. It’s a time to come together and celebrate the unique place where we live, New Zealand. Matariki is also a cluster of seven. Matariki is sometimes called The Seven Sisters or Pleiades. In Japan they call them Subaru and the world rally car is named after Matariki.

The Celebration
In New Zealand there are all sorts of celebrations around Matariki. Traditional Maori would put up a look out post to watch the rise of Matariki. All Matariki Celebrations are a time to share ideas and learn from each other. All these celebrations will start when the new moon is seen.

World Wide
All over the world Matariki is celebrated all different ways. In Greece there are several different temples facing Pleiades (Matariki). In Japan they call Matariki Subaru. One of the bigger celebrations is in Polynesia. In Polynesia they celebrate Matariki with kites. All Matariki kites have 6 tails. When Matariki had been risen they would know it was time to gather sea food.

The Effect
As the year moves from autumn to winter the sunrise moves north. When the sunrise meets Matariki, it starts moving south again. This effect can be seen all over the world.

Laughing

Laughing is an important part of life. By laughing you will live at least 7 years longer than you would if you did not.
Laughing increases blood flow by up to 20% and has even been linked to the control of diabetes.
Laughing is universal it is understood anywhere by everyone on the entire planet. It transcends age race and language and is always recognized.
Laughing reduces pain. Laughing improves your health and if you share a joke with someone or make someone laugh they will no longer feel pain.
When you laugh you are making the world a happier place. When you are laughing you pass your laugh onto someone else. You are also increasing your life expectancy.
Laughing is fun and if you love to laugh and you are very humorous you are a very important part of life.
So remember to laugh. (:

lets make a differance and save the Maui's

Maui’s Dolphins, also known as the North Island Hector, are on the brink of extinction, with approximately 111 dolphins remaining. The numbers are continuing to decrease.
Room 23 of Pukekohe Intermediate is making a difference by trying to prevent the rapid decline of these native marine mammals. Maui’s Dolphins are the world’s most endangered dolphin species. Our class of 30 students decided to create a mural. The mural is both to advise and to persuade members of the public to call for a ban on all set net fishing in conservation areas, on the West Coast of the North Island.
Room 23 has participated in several interesting projects leading us to the mural. Our class has commissioned a local Pukekohe artist, Vanessa Graham, to help design and paint the mural.
Room 23 student’s created their own illustrations and Vanessa combined these pieces of art to create the finishing design.
The mural has come together extremely well, and it looks remarkable. It will remain at the school for many years to come and will be an asset to the school and community.

Mrs Pearson said, " If all the girls play as a team and do their best job we have a good chance of making the finals" .

This day will be an awesome opportunity to play against other schools and have some fun.
We will let you know the results.

Orienteering for 2009

The sun beamed like lightning as students from Pukekohe Intermediate ran around the Bledisloe field, to trial for the 2009 orienteering squads. Many students trialled, but only a handful of students continued through to the map reading trial. All students competed to the best of their abilities, the first 6 out of each gender and year groups made the orienteering squads, that will represent Pukekohe Intermediate at the Zone Competition, in Manurewa, Totara Park. The competition will take place on Friday the 1st of May and will be a great opportunity for children to participate in.

"I think we have strong teams that have a high chance of winning, with students that are excellent at map reading and their fitness levels", Sarah Guise and Rebekah Pearson, teachers in charge of Pukekohe Intermediates Orienteering squads for 2009. "It's a great sport and enjoyable to participate in!", Billie Paterson, who is in the year 8 girls orienteering squad. "It's really fun but in some parts it's challenging", Steven Lacey and Dylan Robinson, both in the year 8 boys orienteering squad.

Counties Manukau Orienteering Club are also running extra sessions, for students and parents who would like to give orienteering a go. Contact Val and John Robinson if you are interested. Phone 09 2386911.

Literacy Enrichment

Four lucky students from Rooms 23, 4, 11, 28 and 12 have been picked to be in a Literacy Enrichment class. In our Room 23 group we have Jorgia, Kahurangi, Bailee and Sophie.
Mrs Griffin takes this class every day 2. We arrive in the Art Room at 9:00 a.m and work till 10.30 a.m.
In this Enrichment class our goal is to write, illustrate and design our own big book. Once we have published our story we will go to a Primary School and read it to the Junior department. As a group we have decided to name our story Rainbow Zebra.
Our story is about a Rainbow Zebra that is very beautiful and he has colourful stripes. In the end he is kind to everyone and gives each of the other Zebra's in the park a stripe.

Week 1, Term 2 Pukekohe Intermediate School held a school wide Tapuae competition. Dominique Hancock, Sports Co-ordinater from Room 45 was the organizer for this competition.

The teams were entered as buddy classes for the competition, and a maximum of 16 team players were able to take the court at once. Lupe Soapi of Room 23, and Abi Chapman of Room 36 were our team captains.

Students from the 2 teams played a number of games against a lot of challenging classes, playing a total of 3 games, making it into the quarter finals! In this game we went up against Room 13 & 45 and successfully came out with victory, which then took us into the Semi-finals.

Our first semi-final game was on Tuesday 16th on June and versed the same 2 classes. We had a really tough game and the weather was really rough, but even though we had to put up with that, Room 23 & 36 still came out with a win.

Wednesday 17th of June we played against Room 28 & 45. It was a very tough competition. But we pulled through with a win.

Our class has made it into the finals and will be playing on Wednesday 24th of June.

We look forward to winning!!!
